Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - May 14, 2013
This is from the May 14, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.6.1 is used for demos in this Webinar
You can find thread on the MTC Forum with questions addressed in this Webinar: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32480/may-14th-webinar-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00: 58 Julie follows up on the 05/07/13 Webinar and Bryan’s presentation on creating a corner punch design. User wanted to know how to make it so that the corner punch held another sheet of paper like a “photo corner.” (Also see Bryan’s demo on different type of corner punch at 00:32:05 timestamp)
00:17:25 Julie then demonstrates how to take a PDF “pop up” file from this site: http://wp.robertsabuda.com and make a cutting file in MTC; Also see this thread on the MTC forum where Jana had previously shared her MTC file for this pop-up eagle file here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32040/pop-up-eagle-and-file#latest; Also see Melanie’s blog post where she showed the pop-up witch here: http://melaniescrafting.blogspot.com/2012/01/another-pop-up-card-enhanced-with-color.html (no file shared)
00:30:53 End Julie’s Demo and return to Bryan’s screen
00:32:05 Bryan gives a demo on how he would create a second type of corner punch shape to create a “photo corner” to be able to insert and hold another piece of paper with the corner pieces
00:57:25 Bryan briefly explains that MTC can be run on a linux based machine but it takes a lot of “work” to do that and wouldn’t recommend it as your only way to work with MTC; need to be techy to get it to work right, have to “bridge” your cutter, etc. Recommends you get a program called “Virtual Box” if you are going to try it.
01:04:35 Using a KNK cut file with MTC – you cannot open a KNK cut file if you don’t have the KNK program – if you have the program you can cut and paste into MTC
01:06:15 Rotating a shape seems to change the size of the shape as you rotate – Bryan explains the size shown is the size of the bounding box – not the shape and that as you rotate, the bounding box grows based on the size of the rotation
01:12:36 Bryan explains searching for a file in the MTC Thumbnail viewer
01:16:20 Bryan reviews “vector” PDF file (note: you need a “vector” PDF to import into MTC to create cut lines); if working with a “vector” program and export out as a PDF or print to a PDF file it should create a vector PDF; if it doesn’t create vectors, it will be a “raster” image (but not all vector programs “print” as a vector – for example Silhouette Studio will not print as a vector, it prints as a raster file)
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - May 07, 2013
This is from the May 07, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.6.1 is used for demos in this Webinar
You can find thread on the MTC Forum with questions addressed in this Webinar: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32413/may-7th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:00 Initially skipped 1st question from thread and went to Julie to discuss finding and collecting “textures” to use in MTC to “flood fill” shapes. Julie then reviews how to import a texture you have saved and use it in MTC to fill shapes. (This is great for using with “print and cut” images or for using when you just don’t have the right paper!) (Search for free “seamless tiles” with Google or other search engines.) Reminder: Size of file is important. It is recommended that you resize if too large in order to not bog down your computer. For printed tutorials on using textures or photos see the MTC_Tuts Yahoo Group – Intermediate Folder – Lesson III.23e_Lettering Delights and Make the Cut_Textures and the Advanced Folder – Lesson IV.09_ImportImagesToPrintAndCut.
00:31:15 Ends Julie’s Demo on Textures
00:32:00 Bryan demos creating a “corner punch” design. (Bryan added his corner stencil image to the MTC Gallery as “Two Corners Stencils”. He also adds the completed 4 corner card as “Card with Corner Punch.) Also See this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32399/adding-a-corner-design-in-mtc-like-a-corner-punch#latest
00:55:00 Ends Bryan’s Demo on “Corner Punch” designs
00:55:15 Follow-up question from Andy’s demo in the 04/30/13 Webinar regarding cleaning up the bird house image he was working with. He considered “duplicating and flipping” (Copy and Mirror) the left side to make a new right side but didn’t because of the number of nodes. User wanted to know if number of nodes mattered. Bryan demonstrates how he would have done the “copy and mirror” of the left side of the roof.
01:11:39 Bryan gives general discussion on 2nd part of the user’s question which is how does a cutter cut and how is it impacted by the number of nodes in a design.
01:32:55 Bryan briefly discusses different file types that MTC can use or import and recommends going to the MTC_Tuts Yahoo Group to find Julie’s tutorial on using files from other cutter programs.
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - April 30, 2013

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:30 User had a PDF file she was trying to convert to a MTC cutting file and was having problems with it; Andy reviews file and issues. He works with the node editing tools to fix the file.
00:28:40 Briefly discuss the next question regarding resizing one of Bird’s files to a different size. They agree for Julie to review how to do later in webinar. See Timestamp at 00:50:19
00:30:00 Andy reviews how to add your own “shapes” to your “shapes” library
00:32:35 Andy briefly discusses how to add a “cake pedestal” to a card as shown in the questions thread but doesn’t give an actual demo
00:34:00 User indicated she was having trouble with importing SVG and EPS files since recently updating her version of MTC; Andy indicated she needs to contact support for help because nothing changed this in new version. Contact support by emailing files having issues with to support@makethecut.com
00:34:38 Andy gives a quick demo to address 2nd part of user’s question regarding setting Rhinestones individually by showing how to break design, move the stone circles, adding more circles, etc. He then answers various follow-up questions asked by users on the Webinar.
00:41:50 Andy shows how attach limbs to a tree using the node editing tools. Specifically he covers using the “inverse eraser” option. (He recommends turning off the “auto simplify” before using the inverse eraser.”) He then demos doing the same thing using regular node editing tools as well.
00:50:00 Andy turns Webinar screen over to Julie to address the question skipped and to do a demo on “flip card”
00:50:19 Julie demonstrates resizing Bird’s card down to an A2 size as asked by a user in the question thread that was skipped
00:55:17 Julie demos how to make a “Flip-It” style card; Also see the follow-up thread from Julie on the forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32356/mothers-day-flip-card#latest; Also search the MTC forum for “flip card” or “swing card” for more examples and “how to” information on creating similar type cards
01:45:00 Question regarding trying to create a “Growth Chart;” Andy wasn’t sure of what user was asking, suggested user post question on the forum with a file or to send the file to Bryan or support to review and figure out the issue
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - April 23, 2013
This is from the April 23, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:00 Bryan explains mountain folds and valley folds for “score lines” in general and then explains several different methods for using MTC and your cutter to do “score lines” but notes there is no distinction between mountain and valley folds (unless you want to create a separate line type yourself, i.e. dashed line and solid line). Also see discussion at 00:21:25 on line color and at 00:34:09 on settings to use to create score lines
00:11:05 Bryan reviews how to change a line style
00:16:00 General Discussion on where to find helpful information for using Rhinestones feature of MTC; Also see 01:14:15 Timestamp where Bryan demos creating a Rhinestone Star
00:21:25 Bryan reviews “coloring” a line in MTC
00:23:45 Bryan discusses the concept of a “brush”; there is no “brush” concept in MTC; he discusses option of duplicating and dragging in MTC
00:25:34 Bryan reviews the “Notes” area of a MTC file for adding user notes and links to other information that the user wants embedded into the MTC file including “photos” of the finished project (also see this thread on forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32169/can-you-add-a-photo); He then reviews adding image to actual file by doing a “pixel trace” at 255. He also notes this will be in low resolution on the mat if “Imaging Caching” is turned on (it is on by default)
00:34:09 Return to discussion on creating score lines and settings to use
00:36:37 Bryan reviews how to try and figure out what Font was used in a file
00:38:07 Bryan discusses whether you had to open the “Notes” area or if it opens automatically (it opens by default unless user changes in advanced settings)
00:41:15 Julie’s demo on using creative “scissor cut designs” and using them in MTC with “Wrap object to Path” to create new object, shapes, frames and borders (Note: Julie’s decorative scissors file is in the MTC Gallery)
01:07:14 Julie explains how she came up with the images of the decorative edges she used
01:13:20 End Julie’s Demo and switch back over to Bryan’s screen
01:14:15 Bryan demonstrates taking a basic star and creating a Rhinestone pattern from the star
01:17:15 Bryan demos using Inkscape to simulate a “brush” effect similar to way MTC allows a user to duplicate and drag; then he shows other options in Inkscape to create clones
01:34:55 Bryan shows where to get the MTC “Button” SVG file
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - April 16, 2013
This is from the April 16, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.6.1 is used for demos in this Webinar
You can find thread on the MTC Forum with questions addressed in this Webinar: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32079/april-16th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:35 Bryan doesn’t understand 1st question; comes back to it later; see timestamp at 00:52:30
00:03:31 User had asked how to create a mix of text where part of the letters where “outlined” and some were solid. MeFlick (Melanie) had answered on the Forum with a sample of the “Happy Birthday” image before the Webinar. Bryan referred users to that thread with directions on how to do this. If you still have questions, you can ask for a demo on a future Webinar. The thread can be found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32108/creating-layered-text-for-printing-outline
00:05:30 Bryan demos how to create “slotted tabs” for boxes rather than “glue tabs”
00:52:30 Back to 1st question from thread; user wanted to know how to make areas of an intricate design “thicker,” Bryan shows how to do it by using the shadow feature
01:02:22 User wanted to know if there was a way to “group” cutting lines so cutter will cut faster; First Bryan reviews users using the Zing and increasing the “up” speed (this is speed cutter moves when the cutter head is “up” moving to the next area to cut
01:05:25 Bryan then reviews using smaller dashes and bigger spaces in dashed “score lines” and explains each dash is a little cut cutter is having to make
01:06:30 Bryan then reviews the general “cutting order” that MTC uses to cut and using the “flatten path” to help reduce nodes for cutting
01:08:46 Bryan then reviews using solid score lines rather than dashed lines and explains how to put score lines on separate layer and adjust the pressure or using an embossing tool to do score lines
01:11:00 Bryan goes back to the “up” speed and why you might not want to increase the “up” speed on your cutter
01:14:45 Bryan reviews different options on how to create lines that intersect other lines that don’t “join” at open nodes
01:25:20 User wanted to know about having a virtual mat with metric vs inches; Bryan reviews how you can enter metric numbers for sizing and MTC converts it to inches but no Mat right now and why. Also see this thread where Lesly shares a mat simulation: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32120/metric-virtual-and-printable-mat
01:34:52 Bryan reviews why a lot of “stickys” or “announcements” are not put on the forum regarding different cutters and other information then reviews how to look for information on the MTC forum
01:41:00 Bryan reviews the difference in “drivers” and “plug-ins”
01:45:40 User had a PDF file for a “print and cut” that she was trying to modify to simplify the pieces for smaller children to glue together and was having issues; Bryan first explains that the file is a “vector PDF” but has issues so items will need to be “pixel traced” and then “split.” He then demos how to use “texture snapshot” to join pieces with texture to cut as one piece.
01:52:30 Bryan then reviews the 2nd part of the ? regarding Node Editing of the image
02:07:42 Bryan quickly gives a quick overview of using the Tiler function then recommends doing a search of the forum for threads on the tiler feature and for Webinars where this has been covered before in more depth
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - April 09, 2013
This is from the April 09, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.6.1 is used for demos in this Webinar
You can find thread on the MTC Forum with questions addressed in this Webinar: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31984/april-9th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:48 User wanted to know how to use a pdf book of pop-up cards to make a cutting file with MTC. Image used is from here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/15614768/Book-of-Kirigami (Also see timestamp at 01:10:40 for doing pixel trace of image to do hand trace from)
Also see the 04/02/13 Webinar on creating pop-up cards as well as 01/29/13 Webinar and the 08/21/12 Webinars regarding using and creating pop-ups.
00:55:20 Bryan reviews setting he would use on his Zing when cutting 110 lb cardstock BUT PLEASE NOTE the “Caveats” he notes in his discussion. Also note: that each machine is different and are used in different environments that can effect the settings needed for all machines; Please be sure to do test cuts each time
01:10:40 Bryan does a quick review of doing a pixel trace of the kangaroo image in order to do a hand trace for smoother cut lines
01:14:00 Bryan reviews how he created the pop-up business card as discussed in the thread on the forum here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/32012/pop-up-folding-business-card (this thread has Bryan’s original MTC file he created) and the original idea from here: http://businesscarddesignideas.com/faltmanufaktur-creative-cute-folding-business-card/ (Note: Bryan indicated that you might need lighter cardstock then 110 lb. He thought that weight is a little too heavy to fold properly.) Couple users who had cut it said they used a medium weight and it cut well).
01:35:10 Bryan answers question about Plug-ins. Only “plug-in” that you need to download are those for any cutter(s) that you have. You don’t need plug-ins for cutters you don’t have.
01:36:17 Discussion about desire in enhancements on dashed lines in specific and general discussion on making changes and enhancements to MTC and the impact that has on all users. Then Bryan gives quick demo on working with dashed line
01:42:30 Bryan’s MTC Gallery ID number is 118 for searching for his files
01:42:47 Discussion of idea of a 3-d viewer in MTC for viewing pop-up

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:46 User wanted to know how to bring a PDF from this site into MTC and use as a “print and cut” (Note: this PDF is not a “Vector” PDF so it will need to be pixel traced): http://papercraftinspirations.themakingspot.com/blog/download-angela-pooles-beautiful-bouquet-printable-kit. Bryan demonstrates how to do this.
00:15:40 Bryan discusses the different “dashed lines” you might encounter in cutting files (depending upon how they were originally created) and how to convert those to a “straight, solid line” in MTC for scoring or embossing) (See also follow-up at the end of this Webinar at 02:04:30 when dealing with a curved line)
00:25:00 Switch over to Andy for demo on creating a landscape style “pop-up” card; Also see these threads on the forum regarding “pop-up cards” and homework:

Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - March 26, 2013
This is from the March 26, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.6.1 is used for demos in this Webinar
You can find thread on the MTC Forum with questions addressed in this Webinar: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31682/march-26th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:48 Creating a scalloped circle from a 12 point star. See tutorial in the MTC_Tuts Yahoo Group. It is in the intermediate lessons. Lesson III.16 found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MTC_Tuts (You must be a member to access; free to join)
Bryan does quick demo on how to create a scalloped circle using a 12 point star
00:04:46 Bryan reviews problem user was having importing starburst texture: Also see original thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31640/small-questions-to-do-with-texture. User wanted to import part of a starburst image and manipulate. Bryan demonstrates how to pixel trace only a portion of an image (control key, left click and drag) and use “join” to fill a shape with a portion of the texture. Also see Julie’s tutorial for creating a starburst card in the MTC_Tuts Yahoo Group intermediate lesson, Lesson III.35 and the Webinar video covering this tutorial on June 19, 2012.
00:15:47 Bryan explains “threshold” when doing a pixel trace. Threshold values are between 1 and 255. 1 gives you only the darkest color and 255 gives you the entire image. Numbers in between vary what is picked up in the trace.
00:26:38 Bryan demos trying to create “dripping icing” with node editing
(Note: further questions postponed for Andy to give a Demo on changes to MTC version 4.6.0 and 4.6.1)
00:37:45 Andy’s demo of additions added to MTC 4.6.0 and 4.6.1
00:38:43 Importing GSD files with MTC 4.6.+
00:45:00 Auto “Fuse and Weld” and “render Metafiles size box” when importing GSD files
00:47:04 Working with GSD files when “texture” is separate from “cut lines” (Andy noted these should be rare.) You need to “imbed” the texture inside the cut lines.” Andy demonstrates how to do
00:51:20 Gray Scale Scan Trace Option (taking an actual photo of someone and making it a layered, gray scale image)
(NOTE: Andy recommends you use contrast mat and “fill” only under Mat configuration options when using this. He also recommends using “stack scans”)
00:56:40 Andy explains why you want to use “despeck” and “stack scans” when doing a gray scale trace. He also answers question regarding the “quality” of the image
01:07:34 “time left” in progress dialog
01:08:06 Node Mode editing – Node editing handles changed to squares to be more visible
01:09:14 Rotate Duplication (Edit—Duplicate—Rotate Duplicate)
01:15:20 Nested Duplication (Edit –Duplicate –Nested Duplicate)
01:20:40 Using “Adjust Color” option in Nested Duplication to create a “gradient fill” and then using it to create a “texture” with “texture snapshot”
01:24:09 Using a negative number in the “gap” option in Nested Duplication (great for using to create a pen fill or rhinestone fill)
01:27:10 Texture Hue in Nested Duplication (adjusts each layer by the degree entered in the “rotate texture hue” box) “Rainbow setting” you would take 360 degrees divided by the # of layers you want. Example, if you want 10 layers you would divide 360 by 10 which would give you 36 degrees for the rotate texture hue)
If you want less colors and thus less than the full 360, you would use smaller number to be divided by)
01:38:36 When working with a “textured” image that has a “seamless” texture you may not want it to scale when resizing or rotating the image; if not, hold down the shift key when resizing and the texture will remain the same
01:41:43 Follow-up on auto 4 point perspective on linear warp (make sure you have the “perspective” handles (+ handles) showing when selecting object to move) (Also see Andy’s demo from 3/12/13 webinar)
01:44:55 Julie gives demo on using the new Rotate Duplication to create snowflakes. Also see this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31723/snow-maker-mtc-4-6
01:54:56 Julie addresses ? regarding Ecraft cutter
01:57:10 User wanted to know if there was a way to not “see” faint shadow of “hidden” layers. Bryan reviews some possible things to do including using pages rather than layers; follow-up ? was on how to create something like “folders” for similar files/images. Contact Bryan with specific examples if still want more help
02:08:25 User wanted to have tracing tools explained; Bryan does some basic review and suggests looking at past Webinars; tracing covered regularly
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - March 19, 2013
This is from the March 19, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.5.2 is used for the demos done in this Webinar.
You can find the thread on the MTC Forum with the questions addressed in the Webinar here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31562/march-19th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:43 User wanted to know how to keep an image’s “texture” so that it could be seen when doing “node editing”. Bryan explains why an image loses its texture and demonstrates some ways to work around it
00:12:06 Bryan explains how to do inverse %s and other options for inputting measurements; default measurement used is inches but can enter sizes in mm or cm (in height and width sizing boxes but not always in other places); use “r” after number reduces; hard fractions can also be used (i.e. 1 3/5)
00:22:18 Bryan reviews creating “custom settings” for various things in MTC including mat size, color, caret size, etc. as well as placement of toolbars and how to “fix” if they have disappeared from your screen. (Note: Your “default” settings will not be there if you open someone else’s file. Also updating to a new version of MTC will no longer have your “default” settings.)
00:29:30 Saving “custom mats” before updating to a newer version of MTC; Andy says problem of not saving “custom mats” seem to only occur with people running 2 different versions of MTC on the same computer (he explains why)
00:32:51 User wanted to know how to create a napkin ring as shown; Also see original thread on the forum regarding how to create this napkin ring: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29570/i-would-like-to-know-how-to-make-this-napkin-ring-resolved
00:48:11 User wanted to know how to change the size of a scalloped rectangle without distorting the overall shape of the scallops; Bryan explains issue and there is no way to easily resize without distorting
01:01:17 Bryan demonstrates how to create a scalloped oval & issues resizing
01:02:58 Creating a “nestie” shape from the scalloped oval by creating inset shadows (NOTE: creating “nested” shapes tool was added to MTC 4.6 after this Webinar; MTC 4.6 was released 3/23/13)
01:07:35 Bryan explains what “flatten path” does; he also explains the two types of line segments you have: a flat segment or a “Bezier curve” segment
2013-03-12 Weekly QA
This is from the March 12, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Make the Cut version 4.5.2 is used in the demos done in this Webinar.
You can find the thread on the MTC Forum with the questions addressed in the Webinar here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31429/march-12th-webinar-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:55 Bryan discusses “layout” of MTC from older versions to present version, 4.5.2; discusses places to look for short video “tutorials” and written tutorials; using the forum to search for or ask for help; MTC Updates category on the Forum; within MTC itself go to Help Menu and it will lead you to online manual (with links to other online videos) and other help sources; where to find recorded Webinars;
00:17:39 It is not possible to create a virtual mat within MTC using centimeters; you can however enter metric measurements in most of the “size” boxes and it will automatically convert to inches;
00:21:00 User had question regarding using font directly in MTC and it showing up “wavy” versus creating text outside the program and then doing pixel trace on it. Why would that be and how best to clean it up. Bryan and Andy note that MTC shows the font exactly like it was designed, so if it is showing wavy it is because the font is wavy. Unable to show because unsure of what font was being used, then shows why doing a pixel trace would bring it in less wavy .He will try to find out actual font and then review in a later Webinar.
00:34:36 User wanted to know how to “clean up” an image using the tracing technique that Andy demonstrated in the 3/5/12 MTC Webinar. Bryan shows an example of how he would trace something with curves. Learning “where” to place or break nodes is something you have to “learn” to “eyeball”. For other clean-up option Bryan discusses reducing the size down to 25% size wanted and then do an “auto-simplify” to smooth out lines and then increase back up to regular size.
00:51:40 Bryan shows how to get the “control” points to show on the mat when working with node editing. Outline needs to be turned on if object is not “selected”. Advanced option ---Nodes on Mat
00:58:48 “snapping nodes” to grid lines or not
01:02:06 Bryan reviews different “menu” options you get when you “right click” on something when node editing; choices you have depend upon what type of line you are working with (Bezier Curve versus regular straight segment)
01:28:10 Bryan reviews conical warp with side discussion on “kearning” and splitting text by glyphs or lines, etc. when first adding text; he shows a work around when trying to use with a more “round” object like a wine glass
01:59:44 Bryan wanted copy of file markusof (Jeff) was using in order to best answer his question on problem using the eraser tool (see 02:12:20 below)
02:00:22 user had embroidery image that she wants to import into MTC to create a rhinestone template for; she just wants the “outline” of the image; Bryan reviews different options to try to get end result
02:12:20 Returned to markusof’s (Jeff) question regarding trying to use inverse eraser and not getting result expected. File is in thread that Jeff pointed to here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31415/bunny-with-bow#latest Bryan says inverse eraser works as designed, difference is that where it “worked,” the objects were already “joined” together and where it didn’t work is because the pieces were not “joined” together. Inverse eraser works on all layers that are visible
2013-03-05 Weekly QA
This is from the March 05, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Version 4.5.2 of Make the Cut is used for demonstrations in this Webinar.
You can find the list of questions covered in this Webinar from the forum thread found here: https://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31250/march-5th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:30 Wrapping or warping objects around a square or a rectangle and why or why not it may not work very well; discusses options on how it might work
00:24:55 Postpones request for Demo on hand tracing turtle card until Andy demos later in Webinar
00:25:30 Bryan reviews Boolean Join tools (Note: Boolean Join is limited to working with 2 shapes at one time)
00:37:20 Stretching and Arching Text like shown in samples provided in Webinar Questions Thread; Quick Answer is can’t really be done right now in MTC. Best done in other artistic programs designed for creating artwork but would still require a lot of work by hand by the creator. Bryan reviews different tools to try to get similar effects in MTC but none will give you the exact effects shown.
00:52:20 merrybaker’s question – Bryan had sent a pm to user; he is unsure of what you are asking and needs more information or an example file to better understand the question. He then does some basic review of importing SVG files and splitting design into layers in MTC.
01:05:24 User had ? about running out of memory. She had purchased graphic heavy file she cannot share. Without seeing the actual file, it is hard to say what exact problem is. Bryan reviews options to help limit memory resources being used.
01:11:40 Switch over to Andy and he demonstrates hand tracing the turtle from a picture image of a card (see original thread with card image found here: https://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31213/is-cricut-chick-on-this-forum
01:34:40 Andy explains why he added the new “stretch and extend” feature and demos how it works
01:46:30 Andy shows change made to allow user to rotate, mirror, flip, or scale an image with texture and have the texture also do the same automatically
01:49:00 Andy reviews auto perspective warping
01:51:54 Andy reviews bilinear warping
01:54:00 Andy discusses that the parallelogram has to use “lines” in a closed shape so cannot use the Bezier tool to create the lines without then using the “convert to line” tool (Bezier tool creates “curves”)
01:55:30 Andy reviews perspective drawing and applying it in MTC (also see Andy’s video link on the forum found here:
02:02:58 Andy quickly demonstrates the Inkscape automatic perspective tool (Inkscape is a free raster imaging program)
02:04:55 User on Webinar asked if you can add “texture” to the perspective warping – Andy said yes but it won’t warp the texture because MTC is not a raster program
Also see this thread on the forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31162/make-the-cut-version-4-5-2/p1 for information and videos on changes and new tools added to MTC version 4.5.1 and 4.5.2
2013-02-26 Weekly QA
This is from the February 26, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
MTC Version 4.5 was used for the demonstrations in this Webinar.
You can find the question thread for this Webinar here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31131/february-26th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have#latest
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:08 Bryan demos how to check for and find an “open path” or line and then how to close it as discussed in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31101/how-to-close-an-open-image-resolved
00:15:51 Bryan gives a general discussion on “self-stick” vinyl (indoor and outdoor vinyl like Oracal or Avery brands) and doing a “kiss cut” – a cut that cuts only through the vinyl but not the backing sheet and how cutting it is different then cutting paper or cardstock. Vinyl must be “weeded,” removing parts not to be used. Then transferred from the backing sheet with transfer tape. Also discusses difference in cutting HTV type vinyl (heat transfer vinyl for making shirts.)
00:27:58 Brief Discussion regarding Sound Issues on Webinar
00:28:44 Bryan reviews how he recreated an image that was too small to get a good trace on as requested in this thread by hand tracing or using basic shapes: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30975/looking-for-some-help-with-a-designlogo#latest
00:47:45 3 or 4 Section “slider” Guitar card as shown in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31140/two-trick-pony-card; Bryan postpones actually giving a demo on making in MTC. Please see video link in the thread for one example of how to make this style of card.
00:50:53 Bryan demonstrates how to create “Text on a Path” by wrapping and then warping words to a flourish; he also discusses “design issues” to consider in choosing font to use.
01:11:55 User had a purchased SVG file that was not importing correctly. Bryan reviews a couple of different issues causing problems with this file. One is an issue with older versions of Adobe Illustrator. (Andy has fixed this issue in MTC 4.1). The other issue was the way it was designed, it has a lot of overlapping but open nodes rather than fully closed shapes. Bryan easily fixed with “fuse and weld”.
01:24:05 User wanted to know how to create a “PDF” file from a MTC file that would include the color fills and registration marks in order to send the file to a professional printer for printing and then be able to use the printed docs to do a “Print and Cut“later. Bryan explains you need to use a PDFWriter program like PDFCreator or CutePDF Writer, DoPDF, etc. to “print” the complete file to a PDF file in order to get the color and registration marks in the file. Exporting to PDF or a raster image from MTC will not give you the registration marks needed.
01:36:30 Bryan reviews the new “duplicate” feature introduced in MTC 4.5. Hold down the ctrl, shift and select the object, then left click and drag.
01:41:33 Importing WPC files into MTC was added with MTC 4.5. Julie gives a demo on importing WPC files. Note that WPC files works with “line colors” to establish “groups” while MTC uses “layers” and “fills”. When you import a WPC file into MTC, it converts the group of line colors to layers with fills of that color. There are thousands of free WPC files available on-line. See this thread for some sources:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30862/hundreds-of-free-cutting-files-in-wpcand-pdf-formats and this one: https://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31167/just-opened-my-first-wpc-file
01:46:48 Julie gives a quick demo on the new “Warping” an object to a path introduced in MTC 4.4. She demonstrates taking a border and wrapping it around a rounded object to create a doily. Also see Julie’s written tutorial information here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31086/tutorial-for-creating-a-doily-from-a-border-in-mtc-4-4-0#latest and Andy’s Video Tutorial found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31198/4-5-1-warp-objects-to-path-video#latest
02:09:08 Bryan gives “Homework” for people to play with this feature and see what they can create. See these threads for resulting files created on the forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31204/february-26-webinar-homework-assignment#latest and http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/31184/bryans-challenge#latest

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:45 Bryan demonstrates creating a shaped place card from a picture of a peacock; he uses pixel trace to get his base image to create card from then uses that to create the shaped card; he reviews a number of tools and shortcuts
00:16:40 Bryan demonstrates creating a “’cut out” place card using a butterfly as requested in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/comment/361281/#Comment_361281; he uses variety of MTC tools to duplicate one side of a butterfly and then create the place card (Bryan uploaded his file to the MTC gallery as “Butterfly Place Cards Pop-up)
00:54:00 Bryan discusses how to adjust your laser offset when setting up your cutter’s calibration for “print and cut” (see Chapter 9: Print and Cut of the MTC/Zing User Manual
01:12:40 Bryan explains the difference in adjusting the offset when using the blade holder versus using other tools like the pen or embossing tools
01:21:30 Bryan demonstrates creating text on a path for a “shoe card”
01:36:50 Bryan reviews “holes” created by joining text or objects and how to fix by splitting and welding; he explains difference in using join versus weld
01:40:55 Bryan shows how to create “notches” or cut marks to help align paper piece cuttings onto base shapes using a basic bell shape as an example
02:01:15 Bryan demonstrates adding repeating text around a butterfly
2013-02-12 Weekly QA
This is from the February 12, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Please NOTE: MTC Version 4.4.0 is used for the demos given in this Webinar.
MTC 4.4.0 was officially released February, 2013: Versions of MTC after MTC 4.1.0 WILL NOT work with PC machines even if you have the plug-in file for those machines

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:45 Follow-up questions on SusanBlueRobot’s Demo in the 02/05/13 MTC Webinar on creating a box file with side panels. Users wanted to know how she determined what size to make the inset shadow to create the side panels. Bryan notes it was simply done “visually,” whatever Susan thought “looked good”
00:03:10 2nd question on Susan’s Demo from 02/05/13 Webinar – How did Susan determine where to place the trapezoid
00:05:57 2 Users wanted to know why their “thumbnails” were not always showing the actual MTC file image instead of the MTC logo when they went to the “open file” dialog box in MTC. Bryan explains that this is a “Windows File Explorer” issue in that it hasn’t always “built” the thumbnail views and explains how to make sure it is showing them
00:14:30 Switch to Andy, MTC Developer, for him to demonstrate some of the new features and fixes in the latest release of MTC 4.4.0. Andy first gives a basic explanation as to why he created the features in 4.4.0 of MTC
00:17:10 Bezier Warp Changes in MTC 4.4.0
00:20:38 Bug Fix for importing Nancy’s SVG files from http://maddalee.blogspot.com as originally discussed in this thread: https://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30461/new-silhouette-cameo-blog-print-and-cut-projects-and-more-at-maddalee/p1
00:21:51 PDF file bug fixes
00:22:20 See Also Andy’s Screener Videos on some of the new MTC 4.4.0 features Links to which can be found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30840/make-the-cut-version-4-4-0/p1 (see the “Warp Objects to Path Pt. 1 and 2 video links as well as the “Archimedes’ Spiral Tool” and the “Star/Polygon Tool” videos in this thread). Andy indicates he will work to make those videos “downloadable”
00:23:47 Andy explains the “parameterize” function (wrapping to a path) and then explains that with MTC 4.4.0, a user can now not only WRAP any OBJECT but that now you can also WARP any OBJECT. Andy basically said to think of it as Bezier Warp on steroids! He notes that most programs limit you to wrapping text but that with MTC, you can wrap text OR any object. Now with MTC 4.4.0, you can not only Wrap but also WARP the object to the path.
NOTE: When trying to “wrap an object to path” be sure that you are holding down the “Control Key” as you drag the text or object over the shape to be wrapped to.
00:53:43 Andy reviews using the new Spiral Tool in MTC 4.4.0
00:01:55 Andy reviews using the new Star/Polygon Tool in MTC 4.4.0
01:10:05 Follow-up ?s from User regarding what Andy has demonstrated
01:14:48 Andy reviews the “Super Smooth” option added in 4.4.0
01:17:30 Julie gives a demo on a tutorial she has created on using the new swirl tool to create a corner flourish and then using that flourish to create a border and then a frame using various tools in the Node Editing Toolbar; You can find a link to Julie’s written tutorial here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30870/swirl-tutorial-updated-for-mtc-4-4-0; and you can find a link to the thread where Julie shows the end resulting file she created in this Webinar here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30891/leafy-swirl-design-from-feb-12-2013-webinar-posted

Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - February 05, 2013
This is from the February 05, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
The teaser section on the upcoming 4.4 release was removed to avoid confusion...
You can find the forum thread with questions covered in this webinar here:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30620/february-5th-webinar-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:35 User wanted to know how to save a “work in progress” when starting a pixel trace of an image that was extremely complicated, requiring multiple tracing efforts. See also original thread here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30631/pixel-trace-question#latest. Bryan first reviews the “general idea” as explained by mars (Mike) in that thread.
00:08:00 Bryan then reviews more specifically what the User is trying to do and the issues you would encounter in trying to do a pixel trace on a “photo.” He suggests it would be better to “hand trace” with the tools in MTC and shows how he would start to do that with the supplied photo.
00:22:54 User wanted to know why one would want to do multiple tracings of a photo at different threshold levels. Bryan explains and uses PaperKutz method in creating paper portraits as one example. See Paperkutz’ work on threads found via this search on MTC Forum:
http://www.make-the-cut.com/search/?q=paperkutz (start with Tom Cruise image)
00:30:00 User has drawing she created that contains “open” paths and “closed” paths that she wants to do as a “print and cut”. Problem occurs with open path fonts when printing. Bryan reviews issue and some possible work arounds.
00:46:30 Susan (SusanBlueRobot) gives a demonstration on how to create a 2”, six sided square box where you can make the sides of the boxes all different colors.
00:59:14 User wanted to know how to create cutting files of the Super Bowl and Ravens logo for her personal use. Bryan reviews how to search for images and bring them into MTC and possible problems you may encounter
NOTE: Bryan and Andy also gave a review of some of the new features to be introduced in MTC 4.4.0. That part of the Webinar is NOT included in the recording. However, please note that as of 02/11/13, MTC 4.4.0 has been released as the most recent “official release.” To see the new features added to MTC 4.4.0 see this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30840/make-the-cut-version-4-4-0/p1 which also contains videos by Andy showing the new features.
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - January 29, 2013
This is from the January 29, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
The question thread for this Webinar can be found: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30449/january-29th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:00 Getting “double lines” on a “pixel trace”; Note: This file is different then most images people are tracing with closed paths. User wants to get single, “open path” lines. This is a Kirigami file found here: http://www.papercraftcentral.net/2010/02/kirigami-valentines-heart-with-bow/ Bryan reviews how to do multiple scans for different line styles. This will take time and effort to work on. (You can find more Kirigami files to work with at this site.) Note: Bryan shared his MTC file in the Gallery
00:25:45 End Bryan’s demo; Follow-up questions to his demo
00:38:45 Bryan demonstrates how to take a traced image with “closed” paths and break it apart to remove the “double” lines or to use the “double lines” to create a “paper piecing” for cutting and piecing with colored paper
00:48:05 Using the “pencil tool” to draw a curved line (It requires a pretty steady hand, probably better to use the Bezier tool)
00:52:00 Using an embossing tool or a low blade to “score” inner shapes to assist in placement of smaller cut pieces when doing a “paper piecing”
00:53:50 How to use the SVG files from NancyatMaddalee’s as shown in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/comment/355499/#Comment_355499
Basic Steps: Bryan provides are:
Import the svg file into MTC
Select all (Ctrl+A)
Join (Ctrl+J)
Layer (Ctrl+L)
unselect (click off the selection or hit the Esc key)
select the large area
hit the delete key
You are now left with the images needed. Turn on your registration marks, print, and then cut!
01:04:30 SusanBlueRobot’s demo on creating a 3-D butterfly for placement on a glass as shown here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30446/beautifull-butterflygreat-for-a-webinar-tutorial
(Note: there a couple of shared files for similar in this thread. Andy shared a SVG file, Julie shared a MTC file.) Also see Jin’s tutorial on a similar image: http://underacherrytree.blogspot.com/2011/06/butterfly-placecards.html
Susan’s thread on forum noting she had uploaded the parts to make her version of the butterfly as demonstrated in this webinar to the MTC Gallery: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30512/glass-lander-butterfly-finished-and-parts-to-make-your-own (note: kab53 also shares a MTC and SVG file of a similar style using a MS template further down in this thread)
01:17:30 End Susan’s demo; follow-up discussion on demo
01:20:00 Susan gives demo on how to use words in the wing instead of swirls
01:30:15 Bryan briefly discusses using MTC with the unsupported cutter requires user to have had MTC version prior to 4.1.1
01:32:00 User had question regarding the “limit switch” on the Zing (note all cutters have a “limit switch” to keep the carriage within the acceptable cutting range of the cutters)
01:34:30 You can find Susan’s Blog here: http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com
01:35:00 Where to find cutter plug-ins for supported cutters: http://www.make-the-cut.com/Download.aspx?ref=lp and discussion on whether or not some cutters can be used with MTC
01:40:45 Using MTC on Mac using the Wine version – cannot presently access the gallery to find images or to upload images – Andy will put on list to figure out the issue (note: you must have IE 7 or higher to access the gallery but Andy said that shouldn’t matter for uploading files yourself)
01:43:45 How to know what your user ID is in the MTC gallery (right now you can no longer see your own number but others can, Andy will try to fix this so you can see your own number again)
01:45:35 General and varied discussions on various topics
01:50:12 User had follow-up question on how to take Susan’s butterfly from the gallery and rotate the bottom butterfly to a different angle. Can’t be done once it has been welded and saved. If you have created the file yourself, before you save the file, you can undo a weld. Once a weld is “saved” you cannot get it back (unless you have auto-save on then you might be able to go find the file before the weld).
01:51:38 Discussion on the “Auto-Save” feature and how to turn it on and to find the path that you gave MTC of where to save it on (Help—Advanced—Advanced Settings (middle column) to turn on Auto-save feature)
01:53:40 How to get the number 40 to arc across the top of a cupcake wrapper as discussed in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30503/how-do-I; Bryan demonstrates how to use the “Wrap Objects to Path” (also covers using the kerning feature, creating a curved line with the Bezier tool

00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:56 Using a Gradient Fill in MTC by importing as a texture (you cannot create the gradient fill in MTC, you have to find gradient textures or create your own in another program. Bryan reviews options for finding and creating your own.)
00:09:05 Bryan demos using a free program, Paint.NET to create a gradient fill file to then import into MTC as a texture (you can find this program here: http://www.getpaint.net)
00:15:52 Bryan demonstrates a problem with a file that was causing a user’s program to quit responding while working on a file and explains potential issue (its usually due to a very large file and object (check by doing select all and check the bounding box, is it “huge” and extending way outside the mat?)
00:26:45 User having similar problem with MTC crashing and not responding on a Mac Book Pro; Bryan thinks it is different issue possible caused by the Wine; suggests sending info. and file to support@make-the-cut.com and to Bryan along with information on your computer system, version of MTC using, etc.
00:29:15 Review of the new “texture snapshot” feature in MTC 4.3.X beta versions (a fast way to take a multilayered object and make it one layer for doing a “print and cut”). He also reviews a potential problem with some printers and how to fix by doing a “texture snapshot.” Also see follow-up discussion at timestamp 00:53:23
00:42:25 Follow-up Questions from online users regarding “texture snapshot;” using the Undo and Redo commands;
00:50:10 How to resize the image and texture of an image together (hold the shift key down and then select the arrow for resizing; you can also do by going to change “texture” and use the scaling bar to resize texture and cutting path if you make sure you have the box to scale associated paths checked.) See also the discussion at timestamp 01:23:43 on changing texture options
00:53:23 Go back to discussion regarding “texture snapshot” and issue with some printers and changing background color to white instead (the “old way” in versions prior to MTC 4.3.X)
00:57:15 Review difference between “paste” and “paste in place” (“paste” places object on mat at height of present caret size set in MTC and at location of the caret; “Paste in place” is going to paste the object at the exact same size and place it was in the original MTC file; HOWEVER, if you “paste in place” when copying from another program like Inkscape, it brings it at same size but pastes in place wherever your caret is on your mat.)
01:01:30 Taking a stamped image (either a “digital stamp” or an actual stamp you own, stamp, and scan in) to create a MTC cutting file; Bryan also explains how to just create the “cutting file” that you would cut and then hand stamp on.
01:16:30 Calibrating a Zing in order to do a “print and cut”
01:23:43 Follow-up on Change Color/Texture/Line – Changing Texture options
01:34:10 User wanted to know how to take a photo of a house and create a MTC cutting file from the photo getting just the “house” and removing the background “clutter.”. Bryan starts by saying that it is best to do the “background” removal by taking the photo into a photo editing or raster image editing program and first eliminate the “background” before bringing the image into MTC. Bryan then demonstrates how to do this with a simpler image in MTC by using the node editing tools and joining the shape and the “texture” of the photo image. Bryan recommends trying to do a “pixel trace by color” first and if that doesn’t work, then import at full 255 and texture and then do the trace with the node editing. See also Timestamps at 01:50:45 creating an inset shadow for cutting line and 01:54:35 cutting “parts”
01:44:26 Adding “nodes” to a line and other node editing features (moving nodes or lines, using Bezier handles, changing location of end points, etc.) Bryan also reviews creating Bezier handles if pencil was used to draw the line.
01:50:45 Bryan reviews creating an inset shadow to create cutting lines more “inside” of an image when doing a “print and cut”
01:54:35 Follow-up on the photo imaging, and taking “parts and pieces” from a photo image
02:02:10 Bryan demonstrates how to “pixel trace” a “grunge” style image that does not have clean lines from which to create the cutting lines from (“Approved” grunge style stamp used in demo).

00:24:45 End of Susan’s Demo
00:25:00 Return to last 2 questions not answered in 01/08/13 Webinar thread. General Discussion of trying to use the pen tool to draw and then switch to the blade tool to cut. Bryan gives general explanation. Also refers users to Section 10.07 “Drawing with a Pen or Glue Pen” of the MTC Manual. Also see Chapter 9 “Print and Cut” in general. (See also follow-up questions below at time stamp 00:42:30) Link to the Interactive On-Line MTC/Zing Manual: http://www.iloveknk.com/0um/KNKZing/KNKZingwithMTCUserManual.html
00:39:00 How to determine what version of MTC you are using. Bryan also explains why it is important to know what version when asking for help on the forums or webinars (all #s in version i.e. MTC 4.3.7) are needed.
00:42:30 Bryan answers follow-up questions on the offsets and calibrations for different tools, etc. and other topics previously covered in this Webinar. Returns to 01/15/13 Webinar Questions Thread.
00:58:30 “Zing Speak” was introduced this past week on the forum. Bryan and Andy explains it in general and what “easter eggs” refer to in Sandy’s comments. Bryan gives a general demonstration and lists some caveats. (Basically it allows a user to control the Zing with voice commands). It is now part of the Zing plug-in. Zing Users will need the newly released Zing Plug-in is version 2.0.X which can be found here: http://www.make-the-cut.com/Download.aspx?ref=lp or here: http://www.iloveknk.com/Support/Software/Make-The-Cut/Plugins/KNK%20Plugin%20-%20Zing/ (Presently showing as version 2.0.2)
Also see SandyMcC’s two Zing-Speak tutorials here: http://www.iloveknk.com/Support/Tutorials/Make-The-Cut/ and the following thread from the MTC Forum found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30065/can-the-zing-speak/p1
01:23:00 User had ? on doing a “print and cut” with a Gazelle. Bryan noted user was working off-line with Julie and thought issue was resolved. If not email Bryan.
01:23:35 Bryan reviews in general why a user might be getting a “blank” page when doing a “print preview”
01:38:15 Julie gives a demo on creating a tag to go with the Candy Bar Display Box as demonstrated at the beginning of the 01/08/13 MTC Webinar
2013-01-08 Weekly QA
This is from the January 08, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
You can find the thread with the questions for this week’s Webinar here: https://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29941/january-8th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have. Version 4.3.7 of MTC is used for webinar.
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:56 Julie gives a demo on creating her “Candy Bar Display Box” as shown in this thread on the MTC forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29639/candy-bar-display-box. In addition, you can find the link to her actual MTC File for it there as well.
00:53:10 End of Julie’s Demo on creating the “Candy Bar Display Box”
00:55:30 User wanted to know if it was possible to create a “fill” for an object; Bryan explains its not an actual function in MTC but shows 2 ways to do something similar (also covers using the new shadowing method). (Note: works with any shape but if using circles, may need to “flatten path” first to keep it from changing shape)
01:09:25 Bryan notes the above “fill” method works with any design or object EXCEPT an “open path”. Bryan shows why an open path swirl, or single line won’t work
01:18:48 Bryan reviews the “lattice” feature in general in response to a live ? during the webinar
01:19:55 Bryan looks at the word book in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29892/problem-cutting-wordbook#latest. He explains this is not a bug or an issue that needs fixed but is cause by the Bezier Curves, their handles, and how they impact the bounding box. He then reviews several options for “fixing” the shape and why you might or might not want to use one or the other. (He reviews simplify and flatten path and node editing to add nodes to the curve). (Also see the timestamp at 01:34:20 and linked thread for additional answer on Bezier Curves and their handles impact on the bounding box)
01:29:25 Bryan then demos how he would have created the page and the letter to create the word book page to start so that the letter lined up correctly in the above thread
01:34:20 A user had a question regarding trying to create a shadow for a “tab” shape as provided in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29852/shadow-problem#latest . Bryan says although the new shadow feature is better than the old way of doing it, it requires some “fine tuning” in the algorithm which sometimes causes a “glitch” like this one. Andy is working to fix this in a later update.
01:37:00 User wanted to create an “undercut shadow” of an object to use to pop it up as opposed to using foam tabs. Bryan explains this is what the “inset shadow” does, it takes the object and makes a smaller shadow. With the new shadow feature, to get an “inset shadow” you simply type in a negative number (note if you get no shadow, you have entered a number that it is not possible to create a shadow at)
01:39:43 User wanted Bryan to review how to use the smooth and simplify tools to manually smooth out lines of an object. Bryan reviews several options on how to smooth shapes.
01:46:45 Andy explains that the best way to get the “smooth and smplify” nodes option to work is to first “flatten the path”
01:49:25 Bryan reviews adjusting the width and height of an object by a % up or down and then resizing back to the original size
01:56:25 Last 2 ?s from this week’s thread (creating a tall Chinese food box with rounded top and using the pen tool to create dashes and then cutting them out) postponed until the next webinar (01/15/13) due to time constraints
01:59:19 User wanted to know where the Zing plug-in installs and installing and how to install when running two versions of MTC on same computer
02:02:05 User had question about placing the laser on paper for origin before cutting; Bryan reviews the difference in which way your virtual mat is set-up (landscape vs portrait) and the difference in using the “knife point”, “WYSIWYG” and “print and cut” modes in Zing plug-in (note: this applies to plug-ins not just the Zing)
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - January 01, 2013
This is from the January 01, 2013 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut! I did accidentally stop the recording when switching presenters, but there was only one more new feature (Drag and Drop) that I was going to go over for the recording.
The Forum thread with the questions for this Webinar can be found here:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29732/january-1st-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have - New Make the Cut 4.3X version being used.
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:40 Bryan demos taking a “print and cut” raster jpeg image into MTC using pixel trace. He demonstrates several different methods. 1st method shown is regular pixel trace and texturing path.
00:07:25 Bryan demos 2nd method when you get too much detail and using the eraser tool to remove portions
00:11:25 Bryan demos 3rd method using Node Editing with the pencil and Bezier tool
00:13:00 Bryan explains 4th option would be to take image to a PNG file with a transparent background and an alpha channel by taking it into an outside graphics program like Gimp, Inkscape, Illustrator, etc.
00:15:00 Bryan demos 5th method by bringing full image with pixel trace and then using that to draw the outline of the shape needed by “tracing” it using the pencil or the Bezier Tool
Note: While working with images you may find it necessary to turn on or off the High Resolution of the Image. In MTC 4.3.X the high resolution is off by default. To change go to the menu Help ---Advanced---Advanced Settings and turn “off” the image caching to get High Resolution on or turn back off and return to low resolution (check mark means image caching is on, no check mark means off.)
00:22:06 Bryan reviews creating score lines for the image used above
00:30:40 Working with and manipulating layers (also see MTC Webinars from 12/11/12 @ timestamp 01:14:55 and 12/18/12 at timestamp 00:52:18)
00:45:05 Exporting an Image with layers to an SVG or other file type for use outside of MTC
00:48:05 “Print and Cut” of a Design on the Front and Back side of paper. Bryan explains two ways to try and do this as well as some caveats to trying this.
01:02:20 Bryan reviews the new feature of selecting one single shape in the trace window when you have multiple images on the screen (hold down the control key, left click and then drag selection box around image to trace; do the selection BEFORE doing anything else)
01:08:38 Bryan reviews doing a pixel trace from your scanner without scanning and saving the image to a file on your computer 1st
01:11:48 Dealing with watermarks when doing a pixel trace of an image
01:14:30 Scanning, pixel tracing, and then printing – image should be the same size as the original unless you scale it or change the size in some way
01:18:50 Shadowing feature was changed in MTC 4.3.X – Bryan explains how to inset a shadow with the new version (Note: if using a negative number and get an error “parameters produce no shadow layer data” means you are trying to use a number that is too large and will not work, this is not a bug or problem with MTC) (Also see Andy’s explanation and demo of new Shadowing Feature in 12/18/12 Webinar at beginning)
01:26:05 Bryan reviews issue when adding lines that “touch” even though not created that way or may be even put on separate layers, Bryan explains why it happens and how to work around it (see also 9/11/12 Webinar @ timestamp 01:36:02 where this similar issue was discussed)
01:39:00 Julie gives a demo on tracing in a box from a PDF file that wouldn’t come in cleanly as seen in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29764/heart-box-template-and-instructions#latest
01:45:18 Julie reviews her tutorial on using Basic Shapes in MTC to create other objects and shapes (see also this thread by Quailridge who followed Julie’s demo and tutorial: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29949/made-using-basic-shapes#latest)
02:04:00 You can now shadow (for the most part) an open path
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - December 18, 2012
This is from the December 18, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
The forum thread with questions for this Webinar can be found here:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29428/
NOTE: BETA OF MTC 4.3.+ was released and the first part of this Webinar is Andy covering the new features and changes made in this release. For full details of the changes and things covered see this thread (including additional changes made after this Webinar): http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/29466
00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:38 Shadow changes: MTC 4.3.0 allows you to specify a precise shadow width in inches, cm, or mm. The Miter feature allows the user to set a limit on the sizes of the corners to eliminate huge spikes in the shadow.
07:33 Texture Snapshot: This tool removes all of the layers, and produces a single design as a textured shape with a single cutting line around the selected shapes.
10:07 Textured SVG Export: SVG files are now exported and imported with color and textures.
14:30 Fix for the problem caused by a Microsoft Windows security update that interfered with OPF fonts showing in MTC.
15:39 Gallery Downloads: Selected designs from the Gallery open on the virtual mat with File name automatically without first having to name and save the file. SVG files import from the Gallery with Color and with layers.
20:12 Rotate Textures: When a design on the virtual mat includes a texture fill, you can now rotate them by right clicking on the image, select Change Color/Texture/Line, Select Texture or type Ctrl+Shift+O to open the Choose Texture window. Check the box to Rotate the associated path at the bottom of the window.
21:54 Rotate by Setting: You can now rotate in increments other than 15 degrees. In the Help menu under Advanced > Advanced Settings, see the Rotate By section in the lower right corner of the window.
24:06 Selective Tracing: Select a part of a design to trace. Open or paste the image you wish to trace. Hold the Ctrl Key, then click and drag to select the portion of the design you wish to trace. Should you wish to change your selection, use Ctrl + click to remove the selective tracing.
27:17 Raster PDF Import: If the PDF file you are trying to import does not include any vector images, no images will show up in the preview window. There is now a message at the bottom of the window to click for the option to trace the image. The software finds the image, and opens the Pixel Trace window for you to select your desired trace settings.
29:07 Multiple Font Import: You can now select and import multiple fonts at the same time (similar to how you can import many different SVG files at the same time).
31:05 Edge Align: Select all. From the Edit menu, select Align and Space, Align, and Edge Left, Edge Right, Edge Top or Edge Bottom to align one shape to the selected edge of another. The shortcut for the Align options is Ctrl+Right Click.
35:21 Optimizations and bug fixes: Bezier node tool now creates neutralized lines after they are drawn. Pixel Trace Scaling: When sliding the scale in the pixel trace dialog, the size shows up dynamically as your are scaling.
Questions
39:10 Discussion of the App cleaner for Mac users only.
41:10 Win 7 and Win 8, no uninstall is necessary
41:54 Shadow feature is accessed by using the Shadow Layer icon, (Ctrl+H), or from the Shape Magic menu.
43:00 Projects with Multiple Pages: Right click on page tab and select Make Visible to be able to view the page contents when on another page.
45:18 Rotate Image with color or texture fill.: Select, right click, select change color/texture/Line, and select Texture to access the Texture window.
47:05 Rotate by increments reviewed again.
48:23 Cameo plugin for Mac is not ready yet. Cameo requires specialized drivers. None of the plugins have been updated yet. Try using the File>Print option to cut to the Cameo to see if it will work from the Mac.
52:43 Bryan demonstrates Layering, lock and unlocking layers, and center points.
54:30 Ordering pieces on the same layer.
01:02:33 Review Texture Snapshot feature.
01:09:43 Texture vs. plain image
01:18:44 Discussion on line thickness.
01:40:00 Printing part of a design as a texture, and cutting part of the design.
01:44:00 Design using Conical Warp not cutting correctly because selection of the complete design has portions off of the mat.
01:52:13 Resizing images with Texture fill: Hold down the shift key, and drag a corner of the design to resize. In the Choose Texture window, you can scale with the slide bar to scale images and lines.
01:55:25 Plugin update plans: There are no plugin updates with this software update. There is no option to pause a Zing during cutting except to turn off the power, which can be done safely. This will not likely change, since the cutting information is already sent to the cutter, and the machine has no pause button on it. The Zing cutter buffer is 25 mb, the largest available. Eclips plugin is not available yet.

01:40:55 Return to discussion on resizing shape with texture and rotation discussion (earlier at 01:27:48). You can resize a shape with texture by holding down the shift key while resizing with the corner arrow(s)
01:49:52 Can you control “cut order” – No, unless you use layers. MTC first cuts all inner then outer cuts then whole shapes. It goes top to bottom and then left to right
01:54:25 Question on Zing cutter stopping part of the way through and not completing cut. Bryan reviews possible reasons and possible fixes. (If complex, split into layers and cut. You can also select everything and perform a “flatten path” before cutting
01:58:50 Does Node Editing work on Mac version same as on PC? Andy said yes, everything the same
02:00:25 When installing new version over old version, “Your Shapes” should stay. However, Bryan still recommends you backup regularly and save in case of a computer crash or before installing new software
02:01:29 Does installing new version overwrite existing MTC already on computer? Yes, that is default, BUT you can change directory it installs in and run two versions. This has been previously explained. Although possible, Bryan explains why it is not recommended
02:04:12 Bryan reviews how to do a backup of “Your Shapes” and then how to do a “restore”
02:06:15 Difference between Beta and Released version. Andy and Bryan explain difference and note MTC Beta releases are very stable when released and usually are the Official Release once a number of users with different systems have tested
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - November 13, 2012
This is from the November 13, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
Note: MTC Forum Thread for this Webinar can be found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28584/november-13th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:02 User had a commercial monogram font that the letter “S” had “holes” in that could not be fixed by using any of the typical fixes like break, split, layer, etc. Bryan reviews different options to try and fix the problem. Thread from MTC forum raising problem found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28503/fontbros-keepsake-monogram#latest (see also later in Webinar at timestamp 01:06:30)
00:12:52 Bryan addresses a print and cut issue. User had a Christmas tree image that had “breaks” between the parts of the image they wanted to print the image and then cut just the outline portion not the separate pieces. See the original thread with image here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28518/how-to-just-cut-outside-perimeter#latest
00:22:50 Bryan explains how to get the picture image without the grid lines; he also reviews the option of “Exporting” a MTC file to a “raster image” .
00:27:05 Bryan explains “Alpha Trace” and the differences in raster files like JPEG vs PNG files and then shows how each looks on screen to show difference in a file with a white background vs a transparent background
00:35:05 “Wrap Object to Path” – Based on this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28575/curving-words#latest. Bryan explains steps he would take to troubleshoot object not working properly and then how to fix the problem(s). See also 11/20/12 Webinar at Timestamp ????????? covering curving text around object found on this thread from forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28710/uggh-curving-lettering#latest. Also see 10/9/12 Webinar at the very beginning on using “wrap object to path.”
00:46:35 User had ?s about how to “zoom” in MTC. Bryan explains what the user is asking for, explains MTC doesn’t work that way, and then explains how to Zoom in on an object in MTC.
00:57:50 User had ? about overlapping letters so that it appeared that there were intertwined, she had done node editing but asked for other ways. Bryan demonstrates using the eraser tool and Boolean join.
01:06:30 Bryan returns briefly to 1st discussion topic and shows example of an inside loop created on a letter and how to get rid of it (often caused by “bold” being turned on for the font.
01:11:15 Bryan demonstrates and discusses using the “knife tool” when attempting to cut through an object (note: it will cut through all layers)
01:16:18 Creating an “open path;” user is wanting to create a grid of squares next to each other and only wants it to cut once on the lines separating the squares (rather then twice, cutting each side of each square)
01:25:27 Beanie’s ? on doing a “print and cut” with MTC on windows 8; she can’t does multiple prints but then can only cut 1 page before having to shut down MTC and restart to cut again. See original thread with ? here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/27781/andy-bryan-windows-8 Bryan indicated he things problem is with file(s) but Beanie says it happens with almost any file with multiple print and cuts. Beanie is to send Bryan and/or Andy a file to check out.
01:29:00 Julie gives a demo on cleaning up the free font “Mosaic Solid Font” from DA Fonts). Julie suggests better fonts can be found by searching for “fancy initials” or “mosaic initials”
01:45:00 return to Bryan’s computer; Bryan shows list of Fonts from DA fonts that would should when searching for “fancy initial fonts”.
01:49:00 Sound Issues on Live Webinar usually problem on user’s end and from the 11/6/12 Webinar - No one reported problems with 11/6/12 Recording. If you are having issues with recordings let Bryan know.
01:51:45 Bryan discusses using “resample” to create smoother lines when pixel tracing an image (image used is a leaf). He shows different ways to do the trace and results each one would provide.
02:11:05 User wanted to know if there was a way to copy a specific angle? Short answer is no. Bryan shows working with angles in MTC.

Also Note: these questions are not taken in order as normally done due to time constraints on some of the presenters this week.)
00:01:30 Julie addresses several ?s from the forum and users regarding lag time and their computer slowing down when trying to work with different images and textures in MTC. Julie gives ideas on how to improve. She uses the scroll frame from the Webinar Thread to show different ways to bring in a file. (See also this same Webinar at Timestamp 00:58:45 where Bryan discusses other options also available for bringing in bigger files.)
00:12:28 Julie demonstrates how to import an image from a dingbat font (she shows how to temporarily install the dingbat font it into MTC for a one time session or how to permanently install it in MTC without installing it in your computer fonts folder). She demonstrates how to break the image up so that you can make it into a colored paper piecing for cutting of the individual parts (you can also use it for a “print and cut” if desired)
00:23:50 Julie gives a demo on creating a corner bookmark using basic shapes in MTC (this demo uses various tools and features found in MTC) and ? on how to save shapes you create to “Your Shapes” within MTC for easy access later
00:50:43 ? on how to create your own OPF (Open Path Fonts). Bryan suggested that for users interested in creating and using their own Fonts that they first review the 06/26/12 Webinar found here: http://vimeo.com/45414631 @ timestamp 01:16:43 on how to create a ttf or an opf font from Single Line Alphabet Characters along with other links provided there. Also see the 08/28/12 Webinar found here: http://vimeo.com/48484658 @ timestamp 01:04:28 Making a TrueType Font using CorelDraw and additional links provided there. Once users have reviewed those prior tutorials let Bryan know if you have additional ?s or follow-up you would like to have addressed either by email or via a Webinar.
Please Note: There are 5 OPF available for free download in this thread on the MTC forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/21137/holy-moly-make-the-cut-4-1-0-zing-plug-in-1-1-0-silhouette-plug-in-2-0-1-mac-version/p1
Also, Lettering Delights has “Thin Fonts” which are OPF files (You get both OPF and TTF fonts when you purchase these from Lettering Delights). These can be found here: http://www.letteringdelights.com/searchprod.php?search=thin+fonts (note: these can be purchased in bundled sets at LD or now you can buy individually as needed.)
Finally, a new source called “onelinefonts” has also been noted (and checked out by Andy to work with MTC) as discussed in this thread here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/28108/more-opf-fonts-for-make-the-cut-users-provided-by-onelinefonts-com.
Also see SusanBlueRobot’s blog for information and a link to an OPF font Susan created for use in MTC for creating Incire or “Tuck and Fold” designs. It can be found here: http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com/2012/06/lattice-fold-and-tuck-lesson-with-open.html
00:58:45 Bryan discusses other options on getting big files into MTC by resizing it in various ways to take up less memory and computer resources. He notes PNG files are good to use because they have a “transparent” background as opposed to a “white” background
01:07:45 Susan gives a demonstration for creating a “word pop-up card” (which should answer several of the other ?s from the thread). See also the 10/30/12 Webinar found here: http://vimeo.com/52938108 at the 00:59:45 timestamp)
01:23:00 Bryan reviews ? user had about where questions are seen and posted in a live MTC Webinar and also shows how to raise or lower your hand along with other areas of a live Webinar screen
01:28:25 Bryan returns to Peggy’s ? regarding creating dotted or dashed lines. He discusses the different kinds of “score lines” people create and why. He then shows a work around for grouping lines together without having the line types changed (note: this workaround requires the use of Inkscape which is a free program and can be found and downloaded from here: http://inkscape.org/download/
01:47:14 ? asked during Webinar – User was trying to create a “seating chart” that she could “print and cut”. She wanted to have the background “white” but to show or print the “outline” shapes. Bryan reviews what the user is trying to do and different ways to try and to achieve it. (NOTE: if you want black “outline” of shape to show for printing. Use contrast mat and make sure under print options in MTC you have selected for it to print the outlines.)

00:23:05 General Discussion regarding “etching” and what sort of designs are best to use. Note: This discussion assumed user was talking about cutting out a design in vinyl and then using etching cream or an air eraser to “etch” on glass. It does not discuss “etching” with MTC and a tool on the cutter. If this is what was meant, email Bryan to clarify.
00:31:00 Three similar ?s from the Forum thread are combined and discussed by Bryan. The questions related to cutting images or names in vinyl and adhering to round glass ornaments and cutting designs to use for etching on wine glasses. Bryan discusses the issues and considerations in trying to do something on a “round” object rather than a conical shape.
01:03:00 Bryan explains the 3 options on the virtual mat for “Fill”, “Fill/Outline”, and “Outline” and explains you cannot control the depth of the outline
01:11:09 Bryan explains the differences in “Join”, “weld” and “Boolean join”
01:22:03 Bryan explains the difference in “split” and “break”
01:26:45 Bryan explains the “layer” option
01:28:20 Bryan demos how to create a “paper piecing from a black and white coloring book page of a candy cane using “layer”, “split” and “break” (note: this can also be used to create a print and cut image as well – you would just “cut” the outline shape by hiding the other layers)
01:36:30 Bryan explains how to rotate an object in MTC but notes that you cannot rotate by a user specified angle – it rotates at specific increments
01:41:25 Bryan demos how to take a picture and create a “layered” picture for a print and cut using a picture of a cheetah

01:16:45 Back to 1st question on using the “wrap objects to path” and the issue that the user was encountering in creating a cupcake wrapper
01:28:00 User with a Zing that she hadn’t used in about 8 months, wanted to know if there were any updates she needed or if she needed to recalibrate
01:31:50 Bryan explains the Print -> Wireframe option that some cutters can use that don’t have a cutter plug-in within MTC but have a print driver that will allow MTC to work with
Bryan also discusses the “Outline,” “Fill” and “Fill and Outline” options on the Virtual Mat during this discussion as well.
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - October 02, 2012
This is from the October 02, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:55 Bryan discusses and demonstrates using the “twain” (scanner) feature in MTC to do a “pixel trace” of a hand drawn image. (NOTE: Some scanners interface will not work directly in MTC even when they work with a user’s computer setup. If yours does not, you can still scan your image to your computer, save it to a file and then do a pixel trace from the file its self).
00:15:15 User was having trouble with a box file she had created cutting correctly. Bryan demonstrates different ways to create the box file so that it cuts more cleanly and easily. He demonstrates using (1) Boolean join, (2) Node Editing, and (3) creating it from basic shapes and welding. There is then follow-up questions and discussions on the different ways to do this. There is extended discussion on trying to “break” a node on a line segment that is not working during Bryan’s demo. Bryan was to follow-up on the problem and provide an answer when he could.
01:00:00 User had asked if anyone could watch and participate in live Webinars. Bryan confirmed that all are welcome even if they do not presently own MTC.
01:00:46 A user had specific files she wanted help with importing into MTC. They were small files. Bryan discusses file types that can be used, best size to use (500x500 pixels are larger are best), and how to import the different file types into MTC. The files the user wanted to import were png which are raster files so you would use “pixel trace”.
01:18:42 Bryan discusses how to take the images used in the prior discussion and make them into a “print and cut” file
01:27:52 Bryan discusses how the KNK Zing handles detail cutting with vinyl
01:33:12 General discussion on cutting fabric and the best blade to use
01:41:20 General discussion on working with “seamless” backgrounds and how to use those with MTC to create a “texture”

This is from the September 25, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:49 Bryan explains where to find the most recent up-to-date release of MTC and the various cutter “plug-ins. “ He then discusses saving the file as a download before installing (www.make-the-cut.com/downloads.aspx (Note: Version 4.1.0 is the last version that works with a Cricut. The present release is version 4.1.1 and WILL NOT work with a Cricut even if you had the Cricut plug-in.)
00:05:42 Julie gives a demonstration on how to create a Cake Favor Box with a “purse box” as shown in this youtube video found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSSBnABv8JY&feature=player_embedded
PLEASE NOTE: There is a gap in the recording at about 00:42:46 due to a problem with Bryan's system. (There are about 4 minutes missing.)
01:06:00 Bryan demos how to flow text into a shape in Inkscape using the Envelope Extension (he says there is also a Bezier Envelope Extension that can be used but he was unable to show it)
01:19:00 Bryan demonstrates how to use the “inset shadow” to clean up an image that did not have a close trace for a “print and cut” to eliminate white edges
01:32:10 Bryan explains how to export a file from MTC to an SVG file while keeping the layers and the colors. He also explains why you might want to save a file as an SVG File.
01:46:40 Bryan discusses how to keep the correct size of an image when importing into MTC. MTC exports as 90 DPI, same as Inkscape’s default. (Illustrator’s is 72, Corel Draw is 300 or 1, while Silhouette Studio uses 25 or 26)
01:49:55 Bryan reviews again how to download and save the MTC.exe (executable file) to save for backup purposes. He then explains how to find the MTC program folder to backit up if you don’t have the .exe file. He also suggests looking at Scrappydew.com for videos on how to install and run 2 versions of MTC on 1 computer; searching the forum for older threads discussing how to backup MTC and/or watching prior Webinar videos that detail this information as well.
01:55:05 Bryan reviews how to back-up “Your Shapes,” the MTC installed fonts, any customized mat settings, or any “presets” you have saved for conical wrap or the Bezier tool. He then reviews how to restore those settings if you need to reinstall MTC.
01:59:00 Bryan discusses how to “share” those files (“Your Shapes”, customized mats, and “presets”) if you have more than 1 computer with MTC on it (desktop and a laptop for example)
02:10:00 Bryan reviews what the “offset” to a blade is and why it is important (see also this thread on the forum which he references: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/21767/zing-blade-old-vs-new )
02:21:23 Can MTC Designs be used “commercially” – Bryan reviews the terms of designs put into the MTC Gallery and the caveats and other information to be aware of in seeking to use others design work in any commercial way

This is from the September 18, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming remarks
00:01:00 Julie’s demonstration of “pop-up” card with 3 gifts stacked inside card as shown here on the forum in this thread: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/27314/i-know-there-is-a-file-for-this-card#latest
00:39:10 Bryan’s demonstration of MTC’s Jigsaw Puzzle Generator and discussion on how to cut the puzzle with chipboard using “print and cut” (Note: this is found as a separate application in the MTC Application folder. It is available in versions 3.3.2 and later (See also this thread on the MTC forum where Andy introduced the Jigsaw Puzzle Generator and explains how it works: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/16199/jigsaw-puzzle-generator-beta/p1 and (also see the MTC Webinars from June 7, 2011, Timestamp 00:02:47 and July 26, 2011, Timestamp 01:44:50 for further review and discussion of the Jigsaw Puzzle Generator when first introduced)
00:54:30 Bryan answers follow-up questions on the Jigsaw Puzzle Generator
01:13:58 Bryan discusses options when trying to create “power weeding cut lines” when cutting vinyl as discussed in these threads on the MTC forum:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/27303/power-weeding-question#latest and http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/11663/attention-bryan-weeding-info and finally this one using Inkscape to help: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/27007/detailed-vinyl-weeding-lines-using-inkscape
01:47:20 Bryan demonstrates how to use the Bezier Tool found in the Node Editing Tools (Note: Use of the Bezier Tool and other Node Editing tools has been reviewed in a number of past Webinars as well. Look for those if desire more information)
02:02:00 where to find the eggbot extension and install it to work with Inkscape
02:04:40 Using the “delete node” in Node editing in a sample file sent to Bryan
02:09:30 User wanted to know if you can pick “where” the cut actually starts - short answer is no. Bryan explains how MTC works in general in deciding how the cuts are made
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - September 11, 2012
This is from the September 11, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:12 Bryan demonstrates how to import a raster image that has a white background using pixel trace to do a “print and cut” and then using an oval around it as your cut line
00:18:41 Follow-up ?s to Bryan’s demo
00:32:30 How to cut out just a portion of an image into a shape (Bryan demos using a heart to cut out a face from the image)
00:34:50 Laser alignment discussion and demonstration for print and cut (Note: only applies to cutters using a laser for alignment)
00:54:20 Doing a “print and cut” of the same snowman image but cutting exactly around its outline edges. Bryan demonstrates how to import using the pixel trace to get just the outline of the image without the bounding box.
01:04:19 How to bring in pre-formatted text into MTC then add a word bubble and do a “print and cut “around the word bubble
01:36:02 If you have a design on one layer with open paths and you add a new layer and try to use the pencil or Bezier tool to create score lines on the new layer, it still wants to connect it to the open path on the lower layer – is this a bug? Bryan demonstrates issue, discusses causes, and suggests possible workarounds
01:43:12 Bryan explains what the “forum badges” are and how they appear
01:48:04 Bryan reviews difference between a raster and vector image and how resizing them makes a difference. He then discusses that reducing the size of an image is still limited by the cutter you are using even when using a vector file and demonstrates issue
02:08:22 Bryan demonstrates how to use a long string of text with the conical wrap feature to create a file to place on a tumbler so that it can be “read” as one continuous sentence

This is from the September 04, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:05 User having trouble trying to install MTC Mac Beta Version (NOTE: the MAC beta is not “native” to the MAC (it runs under “Wine” as opposed to MAC OS but it is packaged to install everything needed to run).
00:04:54 User had previously downloaded and installed a font in MTC and it worked just fine. Now it appears to be “messed up” when trying to use in another project. (Short answer: Make sure the “bold” is turned off)
00:08:35 How to delete a Font from within MTC (NOTE: You can only delete fonts installed to MTC, you can't delete fonts installed in your computer’s font file system it self this way). Bryan reviews working with Fonts in general again.
00:14:35 Inside/Outside Card Demonstration by SusanBlueRobot
Also see this thread on the MTC Forum: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/27053 and Susan’s various Blog posts regarding this card here:
http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/inside-outside-card-instructions-as.html (written instructions on how to create this file in MTC from scratch) and here http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/inside-outside-card-as-seen-in-webinar.html Finally, here she shows another example of this card here: http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/kanga-alota-inside-outside-card-as-seen.html.
00:48:00 End of Susan’s Demo of Inside/Outside Card and follow-up questions
00:48:16 Julie’s demo of how to take a Lettering Delights image into MTC to crate a “print and cut” file using “Pixel Trace”. (Note: this demo deals with images that are NOT “Cut Its” (“Cut Its” are LD’s svg files). This file is from a LD’s “Graphic Set” called “Hallowscream Things”). (NOTE: with LD’s PNG files you can pixel trace the images using the “alpha trace” option.)
01:10:45 End of Julie’s Demo and follow-up questions
01:10:46 User wanted to know how to “import” or use the “art button” to bring in Lettering Delight’s (LD) “Cut Its” (SVG Files) (Julie tries to find some she owns but there are problems with her trying to find one due to her having the “Teacher’s subscription)
01:16:25 Bryan takes over and shows how to import a LD’s “Cut Its” (SVG files) and reviews using it to do a “paper piecing” vs. a “print and cut”
01:21:26 is there a way to search the LD Images via the MTC link? (Short answer no, you would have to try to search directly at the LD site)
01:22:58 Bryan provides an explanation of what an “SVG” file is and explains that just because a file is an SVG file doesn’t mean that it is ready to cut with a cutter. (Some SVG files were made for cutting and are easily imported and immediately used. Others were designed for “visual” only not with cutting in mind and may or may not be cuttable without some manipulation once imported. The same is true for PDF files. Some PDF files are raster PDF and some are vector pdf. See discussions on recent prior webinars.) (See also discussion at 01:31:10)
01:28:57 User with an ECraft had a question on using it to do a “print and cut”. Julie explains not easily done with an ECraft and why. See also further discussions later for users of an ECraft. See also Timestamp 01:41:45 below.
01:31:10 Site Bryan mentioned where to often find logos in SVG files (wikipeida.org – Google search for file looking for with svg as part of search terms). Bryan works with a logo to show that just because it was a SVG file it still has to be manipulated to make it a “cutting” file
01:37:40 Bryan demos designing a cupcake wrapper from scratch (see also follow-up at time stamp 01:43:22)
01:41:45 Follow-up question by user of an ECraft
01:43:22 Follow-up question on the 3-D representation from conical wrap – is that available in any other part of MTC – the answer is no. Also Bryan made important reminder when using conical wrap – the TOP diameter has to be LARGER than the BOTTOM diameter otherwise it will possibly crash your system the next time you attempt to go in and use conical wrap)
01:45:40 Discussion of KNK’s USA trade in program they just started to trade in an old cutter and get a Zing. Note: this is only with KNKUS site not through distributors like Andy. Cheaper to buy the KNK its self directly as the trade-in package contains a lot of other “stuff”
01:48:43 User wanted to know how to “redo” a step that you have just “undone” (Note: “undo” and “redo” are a “step” process, you can only “step” back one step at a time, you can't “skip” steps, thus you can't “undo” something 3 steps back without first undoing the other 2 steps). Keyboard shortcuts are “Control Z” for

00:01:10 How to convert a sliceform snowflake file that is only available in either a GSD, DXF or PDF file into a file useable by MTC. File with assembly directions can be found here: http://extremecards.blogspot.com/2010/01/sliceform-snowflake.html
(Note: a PDF file must be a “Vector” PDF file in order to import as a PDF file in MTC. If it is not a Vector PDF, it will appear blank in the import window no matter which option you choose to import (strokes and fills, strokes only, or fills only).
00:11:42 Bryan explains the “Key” to doing a “Boolean Join”
00:17:00 “Homework Challenge” issued by Bryan – see the other sliceforms on the extremecards.blogspot.com site and try to import one of the PDF sliceform files and create a MTC file from it. (See also 01:28:00 Timestamp in this Webinar for further review on line selection and joining lines with node editing)

01:25:11 Bryan demonstrates how to create an array with MTC
01:28:00 Follow-up from Bryan’s demo on editing lines in the snowflake slice form; how to select a single line of an object and to join nodes to closest node to close an open path
01:37:35 Bryan answers a ? from missmay regarding resizing an image that has a “texture” included (this question was from the “Back to School Challenge” thread found on the MTC forum here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26638/back-to-school-challenge-818-8262012#latest
“. . . I do have a question about resizing.
When I did the shift, and adjust by the corners the shape would resize but the graphics would not. I know they will, just couldn't figure it out! . . .”)
Press and hold the shift key while resizing and this will resize both the outline shape and the texture inside (does not work with stretching, rotating, or warping though)
Press and hold the D key as well as the shift key while resizing to “see” the actual texture while resizing.
If you are trying to resize an image with a “texture” you cannot resize using the Height and Width boxes or the texture will not resize with it.
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - August 21, 2012
This is from the August 21, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:50 What, if any, changes were made between MTC 4.1.0 release and MTC 4.1.1 Release that was posted on Friday, 8/17/12? The ONLY CHANGE between these two versions is the REMOVAL of the Cricut plug-in and the ability of MTC to use that plug-in in future releases. PLEASE NOTE: If you upgrade to MTC version 4.1.1 from any other version, you WILL NOT be able to cut with a Cricut cutter any longer. No additional changes were made to MTC 4.1.1. Any version of MTC from version 4.1.1 and later will no longer work with a cricut machine.
00:03:45 MTC has not “supported” working with a cricut machine since March 16, 2011. However, users of versions prior to MTC version 4.1.1 could still continue to use their earlier versions of MTC with that cutter. In order to continue to do so, you need to ensure your MTC software is BACKED UP. If you lose your MTC for any reason in the future, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET A COPY OF MTC that will work with that cutter. Bryan explains how to download software to your computer in the future so that you can save the install file (.exe) for later installations; how to find the install files on your computer to save from prior downloads; and what files of MTC to backup should you not have the install .exe file to save for backup purposes. (Backup the entire MTC Folder found in your programs folder on your computer).
00:11:35 Bryan discusses the possibility of installing a second version of MTC without overwriting an older version and notes some cautions to be considered before doing so. (Rob @ scrappydew.com is also suppose to have a video on how to do this but I couldn’t find it. If anyone has the link please pass along for us to include.)
Also see follow-up questions on these topics @ timestamp 01:26:20.
00:15:00 How to find what version of MTC you are presently running
00:16:55 some follow-up ?s regarding custom mats and maybe fonts “disappearing” when updating to a new version. Bryan said shouldn’t be happening, he would have Andy look at at.
00:20:17 ? regarding needing Admin rights to install when trying to run MTC from a thumb (USB) drive
00:22:50 Any “basic rules” to know when trying to create 3-D objects in MTC? No real basic “rules”. Bryan suggests looking at other files people have created to see how they did it; breaking things apart to see how they are created, and looking at Julie’s written tutorials on making boxes on the MTC_Tuts Yahoo group.
00:36:52 Julie shows some examples of “cutting pieces” needed to create a 3-D octagon box as an example of things needed to be considered. (See Julie’s tutorials IV.12_MakeAnOctagonBox.pdf and IV.15_MakeABoxWithIntertwinedHeartsEdge.pdf at MTC_Tuts Yahoo Group in the Advanced Files Section found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MTC_Tuts/files/04_Advanced_Lessons/. These tutorials also include links to the past Webinars that demonstrate how to create these files).
00:39:39 Julie’s demonstration on how to create a 3-D “Pop-up Card” with a baby crib
01:48:50 Follow-up ?s on Julie’s demonstration of 3-D “Pop-up Card”
01:09:00 Bryan shows link to website with 3-D hot air balloons
01:11:39 ? Regarding sites that allow for commercial use of their designs (check their terms of use and when in doubt, contact designer directly)
01:18:00 How to “load” a font so it always appears in MTC (but not load them into the computer’s windows font listings – you don’t want to load them all there as it slows down the computer’s processing speed). Note: there are 3 types of Fonts that MTC recognizes: (1) TrueType Fonts (TTF), (2) OpenType Fonts (OTF), and (3) OpenPath Fonts (OPF, thin fonts, pen fonts only recognized by MTC)
Also see ScrappyDew.com’s Tutorial: http://www.scrappydew.com/mtcclassroom/quickguide/?addingfonts
01:26:20 Follow-up ?s on Installing MTC version 4.1.1 – User wants to know how to save your “basic shapes” and a user getting a new computer and wants to transfer their old copy of MTC to the new computer
01:31:45 Susan provides a site that has artwork that can be used commercially
01:32:09 How to load a “dingbat” into MTC – Bryan discusses how to do so if it is a “dingbat font” and what to do if it is not a font but graphics.

00:00:42 Susan (SusanBlueRobot) gives a demonstration/tutorial on making a “pop-up display card” (See also thread here on MTC showing card: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26583/pop-up-display-card-as-demoed-on-webinar-14th15th-august-2012 and her blog post here: http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/pop-up-display-card-as-demoed-on.html) as well as more samples on her blog posted on August 17, 18, 19, & 20, 2012).
00:32:34 ? postponed from 8/7/12 Webinar Topic ?s – User trying to weld shapes with imported textures. Poppy Flower used for demonstration.
00:58:40 How to use MTC’s “Tiling” Feature to cut images larger than your cutter’s width or bigger than paper or vinyl that you have. Bryan demonstrates doing a pixel trace of a butterfly to create a wall mural using the Advanced Tiler feature
01:16:30 Creating a multicolored image with separate color layers and registration marks for use with stenciling. Bryan again demos tracing an image by color and then adding registration marks for lining up layers
01:28:00 Creating the same type of colored layers for use in creating a multicolored rhinestone template (Hello Kitty example used)
01:46:55 Creating the same type of colored layers for use in creating a multicolored vinyl image
01:56:00 Is there a way to have MTC create rhinestone pattern that is not in horizontal lines? Short answer: No, but Bryan demos possible workaround by first “rotating” the image before creating the rhinestone pattern.
02:00:55 Problem with a PDF file that is a vector file that has both solid and dashed lines but when it is imported into MTC, the dashed lines come in solid. How can this be fixed?

00:00:55 SusanBlueRobot’s Demo of a “slice form” card that also folds flat for mailing (see also Susan’s blog posts regarding this demo (note: there are 2 parts): http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/part-one-susanbluerobot-sliceform.html and http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/part-two-susanbluerobot-sliceform.html)
00:36:00 How to create a “wheel card” postponed from the 7/31/12 Webinar
Julie’s Demo on creating a “wheel card” (see also Julie’s written tutorial lesson III.36_Make A Wheel Card_JF.pdf that can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MTC_Tuts/files/03_Intermediate_Lessons/
also the thread noting she posted the cut file in the gallery here:
http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26449/wheel-card-webinar-demo-and-file-link-to-printable-tut-added
as well as the original thread by user asking how to create this type of card here:
01:29:45 Is there a way to control the cutting “order” – Bryan discusses the basic rules on how MTC cuts – it cuts the interior shapes and lines first and then open paths and then the parent shapes – there is presently no other way to control the cutting order without using the “layers” feature to cut different layers at different times
01:32:03 Bryan demonstrates how to create a cutting file for placement on a round charger plate (Text on the rim and an image in the middle of the plate)
01:48:10 Bryan demonstrates what the “Merge Paste” function does on the “New Page” menu
01:54:26 SVG Files obtained from a source online – look fine in Inkscape but appear “wonky” when opening them in MTC – also not retaining colors or layers properly – Examples of files shared in the MTC Webinar thread here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26387/august-7th-webinar-over-what-questions-or-topics-do-you-have (see post by dimahi (6th posted ? after Bryan’s initial posts) )– Bryan explains why this problem occurs (problem appears in Inkscape versions 0.47 or higher) and explains how to “fix” the problem in Inkscape (Note: in Inkscape - go to FileInkscape PreferencesSVG outputPath Data and CHECK the “allow relative coordinates” and UNCHECK the” force repeat commands” and save your changes) – Then move file right, down, left, up and resave. This particular file also has some open nodes that need to be closed, Bryan show how to do a “fuse and weld” to fix the open nodes
02:00:24 SVG files from Inkscape not importing layers or color correctly (continuation from 01:54:26 files above) – “layers” in Inkscape are not “layers” as in MTC – in order to retain and import “layers” and groups of “color” – you must first save each layer or group of color as a “group” rather than simple a “layer” within Inkscape before saving to an SVG file (select all items wanted in a “group” and then do a Control G)
02:05:07 Is there a select by fill or color fill option in Inkscape? (No)
02:10:10 ? on doing a Pixel tracing with texture versus no texture postponed until the 8/14/12 Webinar but then Bryan gives a very brief review of the problem being asked about
02:11:57 How to find old MTC Webinar Question Threads to review topics and find the files or pictures that were attached – Bryan shows how to find using his username – you can also go to the search box and type in the date and MTC Webinar
02:15:00 User ?s from online Webinar attendee (not listed in the thread) wanted to know where to find help in using MTC – looking for manuals, tutorials, etc. – Bryan shows how to find the MTC manual in MTC its self by going to the Help menu. (Note: the 1st two chapters of the manual deal with the Zing – starting with Chapter 3 it is how to use MTC which will apply to all users no matter the cutter) You can also find links to videos there. Also shows how to find previously recorded Webinars and other tutorials in some Yahoo groups like MTC_Tuts.
User also wanted to know about cameo “calibration” – Bryan discusses how MTC calibrates the “resolution” with the Silhouette machines but that there is no “offset” calibration like a user does when using a machine with a laser registration.

00:01:00 Tutorial by Julie on “Pop-up card” inspired by book, “Pop-up cards by Sandi Genovese
00:34:45 Follow-up on 7/24/12 Webinar (See 7/24/12/ Webinar @ timestamp 01:45:49) How to cut out two A2 cards from 1 single sheet of 8 ½” x 11” paper without cutting the outside “edges” of the card – Bryan demonstrates a couple of ways to do this using the same stencil card created in the 7/24/12 Webinar
01:04:55 How to do a “print & cut” from a Lettering Delights “Cut Its” File – Bryan demonstrates using several different files – 1st one is the popcorn box,
01:11:25 2nd Example of a Lettering Delights “Cut Its” file – a “frog on a log” – Bryan demonstrates how to create the “outline” cutting layer on a multi-layer “cut it file” (Note: this works with any multi=layered file that you have in MTC – it doesn’t just apply to a Lettering Delights “Cut Its” file)
01:14:15 3rd Example of a “print and cut” with a Lettering Delights File – this one uses a “frame”
01:17:45 4th Example of a “print and cut” using a Lettering Delights File – this one already had a shadow or a solid base to use to cut with
01:20:15 A user asked how to create a “slice form” in MTC – Bryan says he is deferring this until another week for someone to develop a tutorial to show how to do this but he then gives a “basic” explanation using a 2 piece “secret agent man”. (see also thread on MTC forum regarding using of “Autodesk” found here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26232/use-autodesk-123d-make-with-mtc-blog-posttutorial and Google’s Sketchup found here: http://sketchup.google.com/download/)
01:41:15 How to remove “double lines from an image” – image used was “flowerrose” from the MTC Gallery if you wish to follow along (see this thread on the forum as well as ScrappyDew’s video on that thread as well: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/25620/how-to-remove-double-lines-from-a-trace-scroll-down#latest
01:53:30 Could “Thin Paths” toll be used to remove “double lines” also? Bryan discusses and shows the results you would get and why this may or may not work depending upon what you want to actually do
02:01:54 How to take 1 side of a square or rectangle and make only that one side into a “dashed” line – Bryan demonstrates how to do this using the node editing tools – he also demonstrates how to make a part of a circle into a dashed line
02:06:25 If you draw straight lines using the Bezier tool, then want to go back and edit the nodes on that line with the node editing tool, it will not let you select the nodes – This is a known Bug that is suppose to be being addressed in a future update
02:09:53 A user is trying to cut with her Silhouette machine but every time she goes to cut it cuts a line through her image – Bryan goes through a checklist of things to check for from easiest thing to check for to more complex things to check
02:19:20 User wanted to know if there was a way to change the “line color” – Bryan said yes under the view menu > all colors but it didn’t seem to work correctly. Bryan was to check with Andy to see if there was a problem. One user noted that it only changed the default of Your Shapes in the Basic Shapes area, but even then, they did not retain that coloring when placed on the virtual mat.
02:21:40 Last question – How to create a “wheel card” was deferred until the next webinar, 8/7/12, Bryan asked user to submit sample photo of project to ensure that they understand what they are looking for.
Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - July 24, 2012
This is from the July 24, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:00:05 Where to find the MTC “Store” for cutter supplies, etc?
https:// http://store.make-the-cut.com
00:04:40 ? regarding “View Path Detail” and the “Processing Window” when cutting – there appears to be a discrepancy in the number of nodes and points contained in the file and being cut – Why is that? Bryan explains why and recommends that users do a “flatten path” before sending a large file to the cutter
00:11:33 User had a problem with the width and height of an image not changing when trying to resize it – Bryan explains things to look for that could be causing the problem
00:17:20 Discussion on what is the best file format for taking files from another program into Make the Cut (Illustrator, Inkscape, Corel Draw, Photoshop, etc.) (Bryan said preferred is SVG because it provides a vector graphic, if SVG not available then 2nd best is PNG or GIFF with a transparent background)
00:21:54 If you have an SVG file that you want to easily be separated into layers or by color when imported into MTC, they should be “grouped” by color in the original program before saving out to an SVG file. Also reviews the “DPI” settings needed to import at correct sizes from different programs.
00:26:00 Do you need Inkscape in order to cut an SVG file from within MTC? (Short answer is no)
00:27:25 Follow-up from 7/17/12 Webinar on creating a “Pen & Cut” or “Drawing” with your cutter and then cutting it out with your cutter by using a rectangle for “registration” when no registration marks are available. (Note: When using a “pen” to draw or write with in your cutter, offset should be set to “0” and then changed back when you switch to actual blade for cutting, also may need to adjust the speed and pressure used for drawing versus cutting)

00:40:40 Bryan reviews where to find previously recorded Webinars, how to download them from Vimeo, and how to use the timestamps
00:49:00 Review of ? from forum regarding a user trying to cut a multi-layered “print and cut” file but the size is not matching because registration marks are not matching up (using a background image to “cut” with but not wanting that image to “print” (see also thread from forum here: http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/26087/size-on-mat-and-cut-size-not-the-same-resolved)
00:57:50 Putting registration marks on the printed project or on the visual mat
01:00:00 Exactly what do you mean by a “Print and Cut” – Do you mean I can print a colored image from my computer and then have MTC cut it out? Bryan demos how “Print and Cut” works with MTC
01:05:38 Quick Review of how to do a “Pixel trace” of an image for use in doing a “print and cut” (Note: make sure that you click to “texturize path” and “apply” to import correctly; Also Note: Large Raster files can slow down or possibly crash your system as they are memory hogs)
01:08:40 User having problem getting MTC to “register” or activate as a purchased copy. Bryan reviews things to check. (Note: If purchased a Zing, the # on the CD envelope is NOT the registration #, it is an “activation code” used to obtain the actual registration # needed to input into the software!) You can send an email to support@make-the-cut.com or go to www.make-the-cut.com/lostRegKey.aspx
For help with registration problems (Also Note: Version 2.2.1 cannot be registered, contact support@make-the-cut.com for assistance should you have this version)
01:14:00 User having trouble seeing the full image in “print preview” – Bryan reviews some of the possible causes and fixes to this problem
01:16:59 can I sell or give away an OLD version of MTC that I have – (short answer: If previously registered, it is NOT Transferable – if you have a copy from a machine purchase that has never been registered (because you already had a registered copy) then you can sell, give away, transfer that copy)
01:18:44 User is having problem cutting – it always seems to “snag” or have a problem in the same area of the mat – Bryan reviews things to look for visually on the mat that can be causing the problem
01:23:32 Eraser Tool – User has problem when using the eraser tool, sometimes other areas are unexpectedly changed – Bryan explains why this might happen and suggests that you turn OFF Auto simplify Welds (Note: at start of conversation, Bryan says turn on, but in the conversation and at the end he says to turn it OFF – OFF is correct statement)
01:32:50 Optional Zing Pen Holder – Can it accommodate different size pens? Also discusses using larger pen/markers without a holder. Additional discussion as to why one would to use a pen holder and the “test” pen that came with the Zing
01:45:49 How to make an A2 size card with MTC (4.25” x 5.5”) (half the size of

00:02:10 Print and Cut question (postponed until later for Bryan)
00:02:53 Discussion of Calibration of the Cameo with MTC for Print and Cut (Andy discusses in general and notes that MTC does not “calibrate” – calibration has to do with the machine its self – for Cameo must calibrate through Silhouette software)
00:06:50 User wants to trace and image and then “thin paths” to “draw” it with her cutter. Andy gives tips on how to get a good trace and then thin paths.
00:13:50 User has questions regarding using “layers” in MTC. When she creates a new object, it is often added to an old layer that is “hidden”. Andy explains the problem and that you need to make sure that you are actually working on the correct layer.

Make The Cut! Q&A Webinar - July 03, 2012
This is from the July 03, 2012 Q&A Webinar for Make The Cut!
00:00:00 Welcoming Remarks
00:01:25 Help in creating an object to replace a “missing glyph” (empty space) when creating your own single stroke font rather than having empty boxes for the empty spaces. See also timestamps at 00:39:58 and 00:49:12 for further comments
00:13:15 Imported object does not have a “fill showing”. 2 reasons this occurs. Either you have an “open path” (a break in the path) or it has been imported with a “stroke” and a “fill” which creates two objects stacked on top of each other. Bryan first demonstrates how to find a break in a path using the freehand or Bezier tools
00:16:30 Objects imported with both a stroke and a fill defined will also come in without a fill showing. Bryan shows 2 ways to fix using the split object or doing a “fuse & weld” optimized.
00:22:00 Follow up ?s on “stroke & fill”; import options include “stroke & fill”, “stroke only”, or “fill only”
00:24:22 If creating in Inkscape or other graphics program outside MTC, make sure that all paths are actually “closed” (Bryan shows how Inkscape will “fill” an open path object which when imported into MTC will not be filled but treated as an open path)
00:26:43 When creating in outside graphic programs like Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw make sure that the objects that you are creating will be cuttable. Bryan recommends best way to do that is to only work with “fills” (not both “strokes” and “fills”)
00:30:29 There is no key sequence to hold down to keep things horizontal or vertical when moving them in MTC like you can in actual drawing programs like Inkscape, others (those you can hold down the control key while moving. However, you can use the “snapping tool” to help some. Also using the control key with the pencil and the eraser will allow you to draw a straight line. Using the control key with the arrows to move an object allows you to move at 20 times the regular increment it normally moves at.
00:33:55 Review of the Alignment Tool’s options
00:38:15 Start to review use of the knife tool but wrong file sent – see timestamp of 00:41:00 below
00:39:58 Return to 1st discussion at 00:01:25 regarding creating object for missing glyph. User wanted to know if you could define a “color” to represent missing glyphs. Bryan explains why this can’t be done (See also 00:49:12 timestamp)
00:41:00 Using the knife tool to cut an image with a texture in ½. User file has a background “texture” (flyer). Bryan demonstrates how to do what the user wants but explains that due to size of the “texture” not a good option.
00:46:10 Bryan demonstrates using the “Boolean Join” to remove the middle part of the “texture” of the flyer but Bryan explains that the size of the texture is still an issue and explains that it would be better to recreate the flyer in a raster image program like Paint, Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc. (You could still “cut out” the part not desired and then scan in the parts wanted)
00:49:12 Return Back to 1st Discussion at 00:01:25 (see also 00:39:58) regarding empty or missing “glyph” issue – if too small difficult to cut
00:51:12 Bryan reviews problem with using a font with the “bold” option turned off. Object may look all messed up; if this happens turn bold off
00:55:30 General Review of “print and cut” (Note: before you attempt a “print and cut” you may need to “calibrate” your cutter if it is one that uses laser alignment)
01:06:20 Silhouette SD and Cameo machines use an optical eye to “read” their own registration marks and therefore are not necessarily “calibrated” like a cutter which uses laser alignment
01:07:40 Bryan explains why cutters using laser registration needs to be “calibrated” in order to get a perfect “print and cut” but you only need to do this once
01:11:00 Bryan gives a “visual” on explaining the difference in the “offset” needed to tell the software and the cutter the alignment difference from the laser light to where the actual blade or tool holder is located and why the difference in tool holders can change the calibration numbers (Note: Once you have calibrated for a specific tool holder (blade holder, pen tool, embossing tool, etc.) write those down and keep them, you should only need to “calibrate” for each tool holder once)
